Deaflympics Culture Carnival Kicks off in Taipei

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the press conference for the Deaflympics Culture Carnival and related activities at the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel on August 24. The carnival includes an exhibition on the history and culture of hearing-impaired people, as well as a series of activities and performances by hearing-impaired artists during the period of the Summer Deaflympics.

Hau remarked that he has the chance to meet many hearing-impaired people during the planning process; he learned the importance of never giving up and overcoming obstacles from these individuals.

During the press conference, the mayor served as a model for hearing-impaired artist surnamed Shih for a sketch. After the artist completed the assignment, the mayor posed for a picture with him and the art piece.

The mayor added that the Deafympics Culture Carnival will allow the public to learn more about the talents and the unique culture of the hearing-impaired, and create a venue for interaction between hearing-impaired individuals from different countries. In the addition, the event also demonstrates the city’s emphasis on taking care of disadvantaged group.

According to the Taipei Deaflympics Organizing Committee, the purpose of the carnival is to combine sports with cultural activities, creating an international-level event unique to Taiwan. The programs for the carnival include a cultural exhibition, a talent exhibition, stage performances, and a talent pageant.
