DEP Conduct School Campus Disinfection Before Students Return from Break

Disinfection work at school campusesIn light of COVID-19, personnel from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) began disinfecting school campuses starting February 16. The goal is to complete the operation before students and faculty members return to schools following winter break.

The measures are implemented for both public and private schools in Taipei, including high schools, vocational schools, middle schools, elementary schools, and kindergartens, as well as public spaces and facilities in the surrounding vicinity. The operation is slated for completion before schools start on February 21.

According to DEP, the disinfection effort will concentrate on hotspots selected based on pandemic prevention need. Typical areas of focus include the young students’ pick-up and drop-off area near the school entrances, public spaces, and school facilities which are open to the public during winter breaks (playground, water fountains, restrooms, etc.).

The schools will restrict access to areas being disinfected beforehand to ensure smooth progress of work. Quaternary ammonium compounds are employed as disinfectant to eliminate the virus without endangering the environment or people’s health.

The agency reminds students to wear face mask and observe social distancing when accessing public areas after returning to school, as well as maintaining good personal hygiene and disposing of used face masks properly to protect themselves and each other.
