[2009 Deaflympics] Table Tennis Victory Grabs Sixth Gold for Chinese Taipei

The Chinese Taipei national team brought down its opponent in a comeback match during the table tennis finals at the 2009 Summer Deaflympics on September 9. This is the team’s sixth gold medal at the games.

Led by Wen Chih-hsuan, the local men’s table tennis team faced their Ukrainian opponents at the finals – a repeat of the encounter during the 2005 Deaflympics in Melbourne. After rounds of close fights, Chinese Taipei walked away with a 3:1 victory.

The heated match for the table tennis gold attracted many spectators, including Taipei City Mayor Hau Lung-bin and First Lady Chow Mei-ching.

At the award ceremony, the mayor hugged the members of the men’s table tennis team and presented each of them with a Deaflympics mascot. He praised the athletes for their accomplishment, saying that the medal will give fellow teammates a boost in confidence.

He believes that the players will continue to show outstanding performances in the upcoming singles and doubles matches.
