To welcome the Year of the Tiger with a clean start, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced that the annual clean-up month will take place between January 6 and February 5.
According to DEP, it will designate a specific time slot (a period between one to three days) for each neighborhood and borough. During the designated time, residents can bring oversized wastes from their home to designated locations where the city’s sanitation crew will collect the wastes free of charge.
The agency noted that oversized wastes include unwanted furniture, electrical appliances, tree branches, and large debris left from house repair (with the exception of fragmented stones/bricks). However, DEP suggests that unwanted large furniture or furniture made of wood should be kept intact for the purpose of recycle and reuse.
If residents require the removal of bulky wastes at times other than the designated period for their neighborhood, please call DEP via the 1999 citizen hotline to arrange a time with the agency.
Unauthorized garbage disposal in public areas is prohibited and violators are subject to fines and penalties. Information on the time and location of oversized waste pickup will be printed on fliers distributed by the agency and posted on the DEP’s website.
The city’s waste collection schedule for the Lunar New Year will be as follows:
- Lunar New Year’s Eve (Feb. 13) : Waste collection services limited to regular and kitchen wastes.
- First through third day of the Lunar New Year Day: Waste collection services suspended.
- Fourth day of the Lunar New Year Day (Feb.17) : Waste collection services resume for regular and kitchen wastes (not including recycled wastes).
- Fifth day of the Lunar New Year (Feb.18) : Waste collection services resume for all waste materials, with the exception of oversized/bulky wastes.
- Sixth day of the Lunar New Year (Feb.19): Regular schedule for all waste collection services will resume.
