Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the 41st anniversary celebrations of Taipei Physical Education College (TPEC) on December 10. He noted that there is a growing number TPEC alumni competing in major international tournaments such as the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, the 2009 Summer Deaflympics in Taipei, and the 2009 East Asian Games in Hong Kong.
The mayor pointed out that for the past 21 years, TPEC has demonstrated its capabilities not only in educating its students, but also in training top athletes – helping both the city and the nation win honor and recognition with each victory
According to Hau, in 2009 alone, TPEC helped out at 18 major activities organized by the city government. He added that Taipei is fortunate to enjoy the support of schools such as TPEC, helping the city government move closer to its objective of implementing healthy city policies.
Citing the incident of a local Taekwondo athlete injured by his opponent during the finals at the East Asian Games, Hau reminded the students that while adhering to the spirit of sportsmanship, they should also be on the lookout for their own safety and protect themselves accordingly.
Deputy Minister of Education Chen Yi-shin joined the mayor in cutting the birthday cake for the school. Hau also presented award certificates to 20 athletes who have shown outstanding performances at international competitions; in return, the mayor received an autographed poster and softball from the students.
