As the Summer Deaflympics Taipei 2009 approaches, the city government announced the traffic control plan on the opening day of the event on August 25.
According to Mayor Hau, there might be over 20,000 people streaming into the Taipei Track & Field Stadium to attend the opening ceremony. To offer a more comfortable environment to athletes and participants, the City will implement traffic control measures at the surroundings of the main stadium; Hau advised the public to use public transportation services, helping to prevent the traffic congestion.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Luo Shiaw-shyan indicated that the following roads will be closed to all private cars on September 5th:
Beining Road: all lanes (4PM – 12PM)
Dunhau North Road: all lanes (5PM – 12PM)
Nanjing East Road Section 4: eastbound outside lane (5PM – 12PM)
Bade Road Section 3: westbound outside lane (5PM – 12PM)
In addition, the check points will be set up at the intersections of major roads near the stadium, controlling the number of cars heading to the venue.
Asked if the outbreak of A (H1N1) flu will affect the sport event, Hau said the City will not suspend the event due to the epidemic disease; he also stressed that the City’s hospitals will offer free medical treatments and medicines to athletes infected with the influenza.
Department of Health will implement inspection measures at hotels accommodating the visiting athletes; the City agency also made sign language clip featuring H1N1 flu prevention information for the hearing-impaired athletes.
