Meat Importers Pledge Support for Campaign against US Beef Products

During the press conference on November 3, Mayor Hau Lung-bin introduced the new members of the city-sponsored association leading the fight against US beef offal, spinal cords, and ground beef. They include representatives from nine major meat importers.
The mayor expressed his gratitude to the representatives for supporting the campaign. He continues to call on businesses and restaurants in Taipei to join in the effort to help the City safeguard public health.
Hau reported that association memberships have reached 1,000, stressing that more and more businesses are showing their support for the campaign. He is glad to see that even meat importers have decided to join the movement.
To allow the public to identify the nature of the beef used in products, association members are encouraged to adopt self-management measures. Restaurants and shops offering cooked food are required to list the source and the parts of bovine meat used in the product. Markets and big box retailers should have the information printed on visible signs as well.
The importers remarked that the public has a right to know about what they are eating. To assuage public fears, they vowed not to import US beef offal, spinal cords, and ground beef until the doubts on the safety of these products have been removed.
