Mayor Inspects Shilin Market Construction Site

Mayor Inspects Shilin Market Construction SiteAccompanied by city government officials, Mayor Hau had a chance to speak to city councilors and representatives of merchants at the market during his inspection tour. He noted that the core of Shilin District’s long term development plan is to strengthen the area’s appeal in culture and tourism. The international fame of the Shilin Night Market already attracts many visitors, making it an important attraction center of the district. He hopes through the renovation project, tourists will learn more about the beauty and culture of Shilin District.

City Council Speaker Wu Bi-chu and Councilor Wang Chih-ping suggested that the city government should provide satisfactory reparation to residents who are forced to resettle. New Constructions Office Director Lee Shu-chuan said that all matters regarding reparation will be dealt with according to the law.

Representatives for local merchants noted that there are insufficient restrooms in the market, suggesting that two more should be added. Other recommendations included adding stairways and escalators at the Jihe Road entrance.

There were also discussions on whether the two original buildings of the Shilin Market should be preserved. While borough chiefs expressed their hope that the historical buildings be relocated, Hau said that in the long run these complexes may prove to be useful in attracting tourists.

Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Lee Yong-ping hopes that everyone will be able to support the renovation of historical structures in the vicinity, including Shilin Presidential Residence, National Palace Museum, and local temples. Doing so would greatly enhance the district’s ability to attract even more visitors.
