The Muzha-Neihu MRT line will stay in operation during the period of the Deaflympics; Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin made this announcement at a press conference on September 1.
Hau indicated that the inspections over the last weekends – including upgrading the ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) network and installing a new uninterrupted power system – have enhanced the system’s stability. According to the system builder, Bombardier, their engineers could conduct further examinations after the line was closed at midnight.
In light of the abovementioned reasons, the City Government decided that it is unnecessary to suspend the line during the Deaflympics.
The mayor explained that the daily number of passengers riding on the Muzha-Neihu Line reached 150,000 people; closing the service completely would made great impacts on residents.
When asked about what the City will do to help Deaflympic athletes if they encounter any problem while taking the train, Hau responded that over 10,000 volunteers were involved in the international event; each athlete will be assigned two volunteers who will attend on his or her needs.
Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) President Tsay Huel-sheng indicated the company will increase the train services during the Deaflympics; the TRTC would also distribute free EasyCard to athletes and referees of the Games.
