Lying in a quiet corner on Yangmingshan, the final resting place of Yan Xishan became the center of attention after being announced the newest historic monument of the city.
City officials have approved the proposition, introduced by the Department of Culture Affairs (DOCA), during the city administration meeting on January 5.
Yan began his career as a military leader of Shanxi province during the warlord period. He served as both Premier and Minister of Defense under the KMT Government. He followed the central government’s retreat from Mainland China and relocated to Taiwan. During his latter years, Yan retired from the political scene and led a secluded life before passing away at the age of 76.
Surrounded by rolling hills and a baboon forest, the tomb exhibits a unique character with its round-shape appearance and a surface decorated with blackish green ceramic tiles. The structure of the monument – the square gravestone, the front passageway and the mountain sitting behind the site – merges and co-exists in harmony.
According to DOCA, visitors from Shanxi province have traveled to Yangmingshan to visit Yan’s tomb and former residence. Yan’s residence was declared a historical monument in 1994.
