“2017 Taipei Universiade Commemorative Postcards”—for You & the Athletes! Transmitting Warmth of the City through Benevolent Drawings from the winner of the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition.
“Limited Volume” is always cruel, yet “free of charge” makes it even more mesmeric. Therefore, the volume-limited “2017 Taipei Universiade Commemorative Postcards” are definitely worth collecting! The opening ceremony has made Taipei come under the spotlight in the sporting world. To further warm up the Universiade games, the Taipei City Government’s Department of Information and Tourism hereby cooperated with the award-winning illustrator of the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition, Yu-ling Chen, to design and release 10 patterns of “2017 Taipei Universiade Commemorative Postcards.” Chen’s cute and heartwarming style of hand-drawing profoundly describes the athletes’ lively presence and also artfully reflects Taipei’s multidimensional city landscape, which fully demonstrates the charm of Taipei City by far. Chen’s drawing always involves the warmness and friendliness of the local people, and in 2014 and 2015, she thus was shortlisted in the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition, dubbed as “the Oscars for illustrators.” For the Taipei Universiade this year, she again showed her skill not only to articulate a vivid picture of the Universiade but also to present a warm and easier way to discover Taiwan. Through Chen’s ingenuity, these commemorative postcards include the images of the 22 sports in the program and some key buildings for the Universiade, such as Taipei Stadium (the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies) and the new-build Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium. Further, the well-known Taipei Metro (MRT), the Maokong Gondola, and the “must-eat” in Taipei—“xiao long bao” and “bubble milk tea”, are also indispensable components in the postcards. Still remember the newly-opened Taipei North Gate Plaza? In Chen’s pertinent drawing, it transforms into a soccer field, making the whole city “start up” for the coming Universiade! Particularly, there is also a “hidden figure” inserted in the postcards, so if you have sharp eyes, you may take a try to find out this behind-the-scenes figure of the Taipei Universiade!! The “2017 Taipei Universiade Commemorative Postcards” will be provided as souvenirs for approximately 8,000 athletes from all over the world. It is intended for those guests who come all away from their countries to send back the commemorative postcards with images of Taipei City and the Universiade, transmitting the messages of best wishes and good luck from Taipei that cross the oceans to their hometowns. In addition, to respond to the enthusiastic support of the citizens, the Taipei City Government’s Department of Information and Tourism has prepared limited volume of 10,000 postcards for collecting as well. Beginning from the date of opening ceremony (08/19), people can go to any of the 10 Tourist Service Centers in the Taipei City and get a singular postcard for free while stock lasts (but each person can only take one in one Center). The 10 Tourist Service Centers are: Taipei Main Station, Songshan Airport, MRT Beitou Station, MRT Ximen Station, MRT Jiantan Station, Miramar Entertainment Park, Plum Garden, Gondola Maokong Station, URS44 Dadaocheng, and MRT Longshan Temple Station. Each of these 10 Centers respectively provides one but divergent pattern of the commemorative postcards. Once the whole set of 10 patterns are collected, a delicate envelope for the 10 commemorative postcards can be requested in the Tourist Service Center in MRT Taipei 101/World Trade Center Station (an entire set of 10 patterns must be shown). A complete collection of the 10 commemorative postcards in an exquisite envelope surely will preserve your own wonderful memory of the 2017 Taipei Universiade.
