Mayor: Nuit Blanche Boosts Taipei’s Internationalization Efforts

Mayor and guests at the opening event for the Nuit Blanche Taipei 2020Mayor Ko Wen-je attended the Nuit Blanche Taipei 2020 event in Nangang District on October 3.

During his address, the mayor noted that one of the city government’s objectives is to help Taipei build a culture of diversity. Taipei’s first Nuit Blanche event took place back in 2016 through introductions by the French Office in Taipei. The all-night-long party attracted over 40,000 revelers in 2019, with more expected this year.

He explained that the reason for choosing Nangang for this year’s event is to focus public attention upon a neighborhood which will undergo great changes over the next 5 years. Starting with the inauguration of the southern base section of Taipei Pop Music Center in October 2021, he expects the completion of a “skybridge corridor” in 5 years’ time connecting Nangang Train Station and Songshan Train Station. The area will become a hub for industries in northern Taiwan – from Biotech to MICE to Startups.

As for Nuit Blanche Taipei 2020, Ko pointed out that the event comprises 7 unique zones, 21 visual arts installations, and 50 performance stages. There are roughly 200 performances scheduled between 6 PM and 6 AM. He also took the opportunity to tout the city government’s 5+3 project, which connects local tourist destinations including Beitou’s hotsprings, Bangka, NTU campus, Tamsui River, Taipei Dome Complex, and more. Despite the dwindling number of international tourist due to the pandemic, he hopes to invest two years into improving the quality of these attractions and help Taipei become one of Asia’s must-visit destination once global traveling resumes.

According to the mayor, the city government has an entire list of events slated from October through the end of the year. These include: Zooloween at Taipei Zoo on October 31; Xmas@Taipei from November 27 through January 3; the Taipei Marathon on October 20, and the New Year’s Eve Countdown Party with fireworks.
