At the press conference following the city administration meeting on July 14, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin expressed his apology to the passengers who were affected by the MRT Neihu Line power outage on July 10. He demanded that agencies take all necessary measures to make sure that similar accidents will not happen again.
The mayor indicated that the city government will take the responsibility for all system glitches that occurred since the first day of operations of the new MRT line. He understands that the public is not satisfied with the performance of the MRT Neihu Line; Hau promised that agencies will strengthen monitoring efforts as well as station staff members on the trains to ensure the safety of passengers.
According to the mayor, the top priority for the city government is to ensure the stability of the system. He has also instructed the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) to look into the possibility of claiming compensation from the contracted firm Bombardier.
Regarding whether the city government plans to lower the fare of the MRT Neihu Line, Hau explained that there is a possibility that the city government will offer special discounts after restoring the system’s stability.
In addition, the mayor said the city government has notified Bombardier to dispatch a team headed by high-level officials to Taiwan to investigate and deal with the malfunctions.
