Special Olympics Golf Tournament Kicks off in Beitou
Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the press conference in Taipei for the 2009 Special Olympics Golf Tournament on October 12. He is also the event’s honorary deputy chairperson.
During his address, the mayor pointed out that the 2009 Summer Deaflympics in Taipei has been described as the most successful game in the history of the Deaflympics. The success, according to mayor, is not simply due to the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies or exciting competitions; the most important achievement of the 2009 games is that the event raises the awareness of disadvantaged individuals. The message it brings to the public is to be compassionate others without bias against race and ethnicity.
Hau remarked that the Special Olympics Golf Tournament President Eily Ho met with him several days ago, asking for his support. He pledges his full-hearted support for the tournament and wishes the event success.
As the former Secretary-general of the Red Cross Society of the ROC, Hau said the organization has helped many mentally disabled children. He believes that with adequate aid, these ‘angels with broken wings’ will be able to stand up on their own. Events such as the Deaflympics and the Special Olympics Golf Tournament are important stages for disabled athletes to stand in the spotlights, boosting their self-confidence.
According to the Special Olympics Chinese Taipei, the 2009 Special Olympics Golf Tournament will take place between October 12 and October 16 at the Kuo Hua Golf Course in Beitou District. Ten teams comprising 49 athletes will be competing in the tournament this year.
