To ensure that measures are in place to deal with the strong winds and rains of Typhoon Morakot, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin presided over the city’s disaster prevention meeting at the Emergency Operation Center in the morning of August 7.
During the meeting, Hau stressed that the storm has increased in strength and will likely bring torrential rain to the island. However, the typhoon will also have a prolonged impact on the island as it slows down in its movement.
The mayor warned residents to remain alert and instructed all city agencies to make necessary preparations, minimizing possible damages to city. Regarding flood-prone neighborhoods, he instructed city agencies to monitor the information on rainfall and water levels, and to assist in evacuation if necessary.
Following the meeting, the mayor arrived at the Yuchen Pumping Station to inspect the facilities. He also inaugurated the new drainage pumps during his visit.
He also visited a construction site on Academia Road in mountainous region of Nangang District. He noted that stabilization works to fix soil erosion problems are necessary for preventing potential mudslides resulting from excessive rainfall.
