Mayor Brings Awareness to Safe Commuting to School
The Department of Transportation (DOT) collaborated with the Jing Chuan Child Safety Foundation to organize a discussion panel between the city officials and students from local elementary schools.
This meeting featured issues about how to improve the safety of students on their way to and from schools. During the event, the mayor listened to concerns and suggestions from the kids themselves.
One third-grader, surnamed Liu, said she hopes that the city government can make the roads safer for cyclists. Other issues mentioned by students ranged from the misbehavior of motorists to the insufficiency of sidewalk space.
Responding to the complaints, Hau said the DOT is hard at work instituting more bicycle lanes and renovating the sidewalks. In addition, the city government will continue to implement the pedestrian first campaign, urging residents to cultivate safe driving habits.
In addition to attending the event, the mayor also doubled as one-day traffic guard at the Fulin Elementary School. By doing so the mayor hoped to bring awareness to the issue of safe commute and encourage more parents to volunteer as traffic guards.
