New Public Works Commissioner Takes Office

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin presided over the swearing-in ceremony for the new Department of Public Works (PWD) Commissioner Chen Jin-yuan at city hall on July 14.
Hau began his speech by praising the outgoing Commissioner Huang Hsi-hsung for his contributions to the City. As the head of the PWD, Huang led his staff members in supervising the construction works for many of the city’s buildings and facilities. In addition, he also devoted much of his time to the revitalization of the Tamsui River.
Huang resigned from his position over health reason. Hoping that Huang will continue to contribute his civil engineering expertise, the mayor invited the outgoing commissioner to serve as a consultant for City Hall.
Before assuming his new post at city hall, Commissioner Chen worked in several key positions at the Ministry of Transportations and Communications (MOTC). He has served as the director of Department of Railways and Highways and as the chief of the Directorate General of Highways.
At MOTC, Chen oversaw the construction of major traffic infrastructures such as Taipei’s MRT lines and the East-West Highway. Furthermore, he was also the key person behind the overhaul of the Suhua Highway and the Central Cross-Island Highway, both major infrastructures damaged by typhoons.
The mayor remarked that the PWD will continue to carry out the “Smooth Road Project”; the department will also team up with other city government agencies to organize the 2010 Taipei International Garden and Horticulture Exposition (Taipei Flora Expo).
With Chen’s knowledge in administrations and engineering, Hau is confident that the new commissioner will lead the PWD in providing better services for the public.
