City Announces Donation Account for Flood Victims of Typhoon Morakot

During the press conference following the city administration meeting on August 11, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin informed the media that the city has set up a charity account to help flood victims in southern Taiwan. He also encouraged city staff to donate a day’s pay to the drive.

The city government has established a special charity account to accept donation for the flood victims in Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and other areas suffering severe damages from Typhoon Morakot. The post office account is under the name of the Department of Social Welfare.

In addition, the mayor also called on city employees to donate a single day’s worth of wage to the flood victims. He noted that the Executive Yuan has also initiated a donation drive, urging its employees to donate one day’s wage to help the recovery of the regions hit by the typhoon.

Hau remarked that Taipei is an immigrant city; many of its residents hail from other parts of the island – including the disaster areas. According to the mayor, a city employee told him that he is extremely grateful to the city government for dispatching rescue teams and relief supplies, because his grandparents live in southern Taiwan. Their efforts will definitely help the grandfathers and grandmothers of many people.
