Taipei City Government announced the results of the International Design Competition for the Taipei Pop Music Center on January 29. Reiser + Umemoto RUR Architecture PC from the US emerged as the first place winner. The mayor praised the finalists for their excellent design works. He noted that the construction of the pop music center is the first step of a long process. He looks forward to the completion of the facility in 2014, allowing Chinese pop music to affect current and future generations of music lovers. According to the mayor, the finalists demonstrated their innovations and creativity by incorporating unique elements – overpasses, rice paddies, and even Taiwanese outdoor banquets – into their designs. Hau also expressed his gratitude to the members of the jury. He realized that there could only be one first place winner, and it is very difficult for the jury members to choose among an array of outstanding works. Jury Chairman Lars Lerup said he is honored to serve on a committee that is responsible for choosing the design of the building that will represent the next generation of Taipei’s architecture. He is proud of the jury’s accomplishment. http://english.taipei.gov.tw/ct.asp?xItem=1106132&ctNode=8472&mp=100002
