During a ceremony on December 20, zoo officials announced the results of the online name-voting event for the newest members of the zoo – lion cub triplets. The set of names Laien-ban, Laien-ni and Laien-na won the most votes.
According to Ms. Chu, the winner of the naming contest, the English word “lion” (pronounced “Laien” in Chinese) gave her the inspirations for the names.
The mother lion Fu-an gave birth to the cubs on July 24, 2009.
At the ceremony, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin presented plaques bearing the claw imprint of the cubs to the six contest participants whose suggestions made the shortlist.
The mayor and Taipei Zoo Director Jason Yeh also accompanied 52 children from local orphanages to see the young lions. He presented each visitor with a small gift, hoping to share the happy occasion with them.
