Industrial Design Award Demonstrates the Potentials of ‘Made in Taiwan’

Mayor Hau Lung-bin presented the certificates to the winners of the 2009 Taipei Industrial Design Award during the award ceremony at city hall on October 13. He hopes that Taiwan will surpass Northern Europe and become the capital of creativity and innovation, bringing the term “Made in Taiwan” to a new level in the international scene.
This year’s event, organized by the Department of Economic Development and the Taiwan Design Center, attracted 943 entries – a 50 percent growth compared with last year’s competition. The theme of the 2009 competition is “blossom”, symbolizing the upcoming 2010 Taipei International Garden and Horticultural Expo and letting the creativity of local designers bring out the beauty of Taipei.
The winners of this year’s competition include 15 individuals and 2 companies. Among the winners, the intricate “Blooming City” created by 24-year-old designer surnamed Chou won the first place award. His work incorporated the major landmarks of Taipei such as the Taipei 101, the Miramar Ferris Wheel, the CKS Memorial Hall, and the Grand Hotel.
The mayor remarked that the creativity and the beauty of the winning works impress him. He is also amazed at the young age of many award winners; one of the second place winners is a third-year student in college.
During his speech, Hau pointed out that Taipei is a free and democratic city, making it an ideal cradle for creativity and innovations. This year, the City utilized its strength in innovation to overcome the limitations in fund and space, making the 2009 Summer Deaflympics a success.
With the rising importance of the creative industry, Hau said the city government will be hosting the 2011 International Design Alliance (IDA) World Congress at the Songshan Tobacco Plant Culture Park. The international event will attract a large number of designers from around the world to Taipei. He also promised that Taipei City Government will continue to hold the Taipei Industrial Design Award to recognize outstanding designs and innovations.
