New Vaccination Policy: 5-in-1 DTaP-Hib-IPV Vaccine for Infants from March 2010

Effective as of 1st of March, 2010, the Centers for Disease Control, Taiwan has announced changes to routine vaccination of infants to strengthen the health care of infants nationally and enhance the effectiveness of immunization. Under the new policy, a 5-in-1 DTaP-Hib-IPV vaccine (Diphtheria and Tetanus Toxoid with Acellular Pertussis, Haemophilus Influenzae type b and Inactivated Polio) will replace the traditional 3-in-1 DTPw (Diphtheria, Tetanus and whole cell Pertussi) vaccine.

In 1955, Taiwan began carrying out the traditional 3-in-1 (DTPw) infant routine vaccination policy for the prevention of Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussi. Inoculations take place on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 18th month after the infant's birth. The 5-in-1 DTaP-Hib-IPV vaccine takes the traditional 3-in-1 (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussi) vaccine and substitute whole cell pertussi with acellular pertussi. The switch reduces the chance of negative effects like fever, inflamed skin etc. Another change to the 3-in-1 vaccine is the addition of IP (inactive polio) and Hib (Haemophilus Influenzae type b) vaccine to increase immunity against both diseases.

For the 5-in-1 vaccine, first inoculation is needed 2 months after birth followed by 3 booster shots on the 4th and 6th and 18th month. Being an inactive vaccine, it can be administered along side others vaccines, with one exception, the need for a month of separation with Japanese Encephalitis Virus vaccine.

Starting on the 1st of March, infants of the age mentioned (2, 4, 6 and 18 moths) with citizenship for the Republic of China are eligible for the service. For foreigners, either parents needs to possess Health Insurance or an Alien Resident Certificate. Parents are advised to bring along baby's National Health Insurance IC card and Children's Health Book and go to contracted medical institutes in Taipei to get your babies vaccinated. For further enquiries, please feel free to contact citizen hotline 1999 or the Department of Health's vaccination hotline 23754341 within office hours or the 12 districts health centers in Taipei.
