WBSC U23 Baseball World Cup to Kick-off Starting October 13

Press conference for the WBSC U23 Baseball ChampionshipThe 2022 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U23 Baseball World Cup will kick-off on October 13. The matches will take place at Taipei Tianmu Baseball Stadium, Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium, and Douliu Stadium. A total of 12 teams around the world will compete for the top honor during the 11-day event.


The Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA) organized a press conference for the tournament on October 11. Guests attending the event include WBSC Executive Director Michael Schmidt, Commissioner Li Tzai-li from Taipei City Department of Sports, and CTBA Deputy Chairman Lin Hua-wei. 


During his address, Commissioner Li remarked that baseball is often referred to as the national pastime of Taiwan. He expressed his gratitude to WBSC for the opportunity to cohost the tournament. He also thanked CTBA for choosing Taipei City as the host city. Li invited the public to come and cheer for the local team starting on October 13, and wish the competition a success.


The event is jointly hosted by CTBA and the Department of Sports. The preliminaries are conducted in the single round robin format with participating teams divided into categories A and B. The teams under category A will play out their matches over six days at Douliu Baseball Field and Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium. Category A teams include Colombia, Germany, Japan, South Africa, Venezuela, and Chinese Taipei. 


On the other hand, the teams under category B – Australia, Cuba, South Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, and Puerto Rico – will face-off starting October 13 at the Tianmu Baseball Stadium. The first match of the tournament will see Chinese Taipei take on Colombia. 


The teams finishing in the top 3 in their respective categories will advance to the semifinal super rounds. The super round matches, finals, and bronze medal matches will take place at the Tianmu Baseball Stadium between October 20 and 23.
