DEP Inaugurates Wenshan Recycled Furniture Center
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) held an opening ceremony for the City’s third recycled furniture auction house in Wenshan District on June 6.
To mark the opening of the center, DEP prepared 400 recycled furniture and bikes for a special opening auction – with starting prices going as low as 30 percent. The auction of renovated bikes received popular feedback; the 30 renovated bikes were all gone within a short period.
Showing his support for the recycled furniture center, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin served as the guest auctioneer for the opening event. He successfully auctioned off three pieces of furniture for a fair price.
Speaking at the event, the mayor recalled that his first home in the United States consisted primarily of used furniture bought at the local flea market. It cost him only 20 dollars to furnish his home. Citing his personal experience, Hau stressed that reusing unwanted furniture not only reduce waste but also offers additional pleasure through the handicraft.
The new Wenshan Recycled Furniture Auction House is located at the original site of Ankang Market. The old market, which outlived its original purpose and became a loitering ground for the homeless, has received a complete overhaul. DEP invested over NT$1 million in renovation works.
The auction house is open for business every Tuesday through Friday between 9 AM and 5 PM. Auctions will be held every Saturday between 11 AM and 5 PM. Over 300 pieces of recycled furniture are available for sale every week.
