The members of Jianguo High School Marching Band, who claimed first place at the 2010 World Association of Marching Show Bands World Championship in Potsdam, met Mayor Hau Lung-bin at city hall on August 7.
In addition to speaking about their experience in Germany, the band also staged a short demonstration of their award-winning performance, to the delight of spectators.
The mayor noted that he conveyed his well-wishes through the education commissioner upon receiving the good news that Jianguo High School Marching Band took first place at the competition. The band, comprising students from six institutions, have won the world title after four months of intensive training, and he feels proud and honored of their achievements.
The 28-year-old Jianguo High School Marching Band boasts an impressive track record at a number of international competitions, including first place at the competition in Milan in 2007 and first place at the Calgary Stampede Parade in 2009.
A total of 87 members participated in the competition held in Germany this year. While the students of Jianguo High School comprise the majority of band members, there were also students from Zhongshan Girls’ Senior High School, Taipei Jingmei Girls High School, Nangang Vocational High School, Taipei First Girls’ High School, and Bailing Senior High School.
Hau took the opportunity to invite the band members to perform at the upcoming 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo. He noted that there will be over 7,000 performances throughout the expo period spanning several months, and the band will play a key role in delivering an energetic spirit of Taipei in front of international visitors.
