Mayor Meets TOGA Delegation, Vows to Promote Orchids at Flower Expo
Mayor Hau Lung-bin met with a delegation of orchid growers led by Taiwan Orchid Growers Association (TOGA) Secretary-general Lin Feng-pei and Art Director Cheng Hsiu-wei on June 2. The delegation represented Taiwan’s orchid industry at the 2010 Chelsea Flower Show in the UK.
The team members took time to rearrange the meeting room, transforming it into a smaller replication of TOGA’s exhibition booth at the show. The floral decoration infused the venue with the pleasant smell of orchids.
During his address, Hau congratulated the delegation for winning the silver medal at the show. He noted that the visit by Queen Elizabeth II at Taiwan’s exhibition area demonstrated how the island’s orchids won international fame through their beauty and quality.
The mayor promised that the grace of Taiwan’s orchids will be spotlighted at the 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo. The showcase will provide valuable opportunities for Taiwan to promote its horticulture industry and success in flower cultivation to the international community.
Approximately 1,600 different kinds of plants will appear at the expo. Among the 3,300 breeds displayed, roughly 95-percent are native to the island – including 600-800 breeds of orchids during the 2011 Taiwan International Orchid Show.
At the end of the meeting, the leaders of the TOGA delegation presented the mayor with a Phalaenopsis Fortune Saltzman Orchid and a Phalaenopsis Aphrodite Orchid.
