City Strengthens Typhoon Information Updates, Reviews Class and Work Suspension Standards
During the city administration meeting on October 6, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin instructed the Department of Information Technology (DOIT) and the Taipei City Fire Department (TCFD) to provide a link to the disaster prevention information and typhoon update information to the city’s website.
The mayor also requested that the latest updates on typhoon should be made available to the 1999 Citizen Hotline call center, allowing callers to access the most up-to-date information on approaching typhoons.
Regarding the damages caused by Typhoon Parma, TCFD pointed out that there were 35 cases of power outage, fallen tree, and minor landslide in the city. All the reported incidents were resolved by October 6.
On the topic of possible revisions to the city’s standards on suspending work and school due to typhoon, the mayor pointed out that its standards are identical to the central government – the typhoon should have a maximum wind speed above level 10 and single day rainfall of 350 mm or more.
He added that while the city’s rain sewers can deal with 350mm of rainfall a day, the system may have problems dealing with intense rain over short periods. Hau stressed that the city government will have to consult with experts before making a final decision on whether to revise its standards for suspending school and work.
