Daan Police Crack Phone Frauds, Prevent Loss of NT$6 Million
The Daan Police District (DAPD) of Taipei City Police Department (TCPD) launched a new wave of crackdown against phone frauds in April, seeking to prevent the schemes before they cause actual damages.
With the assistance of local banks and the National Police Agency (the agency also established the “165 Anti-Fraud Hotline”), DAPD has prevented four residents from becoming the victims of fraud rings, stopping potential monetary loss of up to NT$6 million.
The initiatives taken by the police agency include reinforcing collaborations with financial institutions and conducting on-site consultation for individuals more susceptible to cons. The chiefs of police stations took the initiative to visit bank representatives, informing them about schemes used by fraud rings. They asked bank workers to keep an eye out for possible attempts and to notify the law enforcement about suspicious transactions.
DAPD reminds the public to be aware of ongoing phone schemes claiming to be a part of criminal investigations. The telephone scammers would identify themselves as employees from institutions such as hospitals, courts, or police agencies. They will request or demand access to your bank accounts. If you refuse, the caller would threaten to arrest you.
The police agency stresses that courts, prosecutors, and law enforcements will NOT take the following measures during criminal investigations:
1. Ask for cash transfers
2. Ask to take over your bank account(s)
3. Fax legal notices to residents
4. Take deposition over the phone
5. Threaten to arrest you over the phone
To report or seek advice on suspected phone frauds, please call 110 or 165.
