Earth Day Event to Promote Vegetarian Diet, Awareness on Global Warming

To celebrate Earth Day, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will be collaborating with several religious organizations – including Tzu Chi Foundation, Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Foundation, Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association, and Merit Times – to organize a fair promoting vegetarian diet and environment awareness. The fair will take place at CKS Memorial Hall on April 17 and 18.
According to the report from the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), the animal husbandry industry accounts for 18 percent of the world’s greenhouse emissions; the figure is even higher than the carbon dioxide from cars, which is responsible for 13.5 percent of total carbon emission.
Through this event, DEP encourages the public to adjust their diets by adding more vegetables and fruits to replace meat. Doing so would help reduce carbon emission and slow down the pace of global warming.
The two-day-long fair will kick off with a cooking show featuring renowned chef Cheng Yen-chi (also known as ‘Master A-chi’) and Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin. The two will prepare and serve a complete vegetarian course to 30 ‘Earth Day Kids’.
DEP is still accepting the registration for ‘Earth Day Kids’. Qualified candidates should be elementary school students born on April 22.The deadline for registration is April 15. The first 30 participants to complete the registration will join other Earth Day kids at the opening event. For more information, please contact Ms. Lin at: 02-2728-7245.
At the fair, visitors can try out eco-friendly applications, green IT appliances, games for the entire family, as well as attending the joint prayer session in the night. DEP invites everyone to come and get involved with protecting our planet.
