Mayor: City to Offer Full Support for Indigenous Community Development

Mayor attending the press conference for promoting products from Xiulin Township in HualianMayor Ko Wen-je attended the press conference on the promotion of spring season agricultural produce and craftwork from Hualian’s Taroko Tribe on April 6. During his address, he pointed out that Taipei City conducts exchanges with other municipalities on a regular basis, and the city government is honored for having this opportunity to work with Hulian County’s Xiulin Township.
The mayor pointed out that due to the pandemic, the global economy seems to favor the growth of e-commerce. From the exchanges of experience among city leaders during the smart city expo 2 weeks ago, it seems that a lot of work has gone into incorporating the online and the offline aspects of businesses. While people can purchase goods over the internet, they still need a place where they can obtain actual physical experience.
He cited the example of Xiulun Town Hall which introduced an online merchandise ordering page of local products. To provide potential customers in Taipei with a place to see the items physically, the town government will hold a two-day exhibition at the Taiwanese Indigenous Cultural Center inside Taipei Expo Park to showcase the handicraft and agricultural produce from Xiulun.
Ko remarked that the Taipei’s Indigenous People’s Commission, created in 1996, is the first municipal government agency established to assist the indigenous community. Over the years, the city government worked on serving the indigenous population, including short-term subsidy for room and board in Taipei, organization of indigenous-themed events such as the Naruwan Festival, and additional cash rewards for people acquiring indigenous language certification. It also seeks to narrow the urban-rural divide through promoting the CooC Cloud which strengthens remote learning possibilities.
As a part of the collaboration between Taipei City and Xiulin Township, the promotional clip on Xiulin Township will be aired on the platform screens at MRT stations across the city over a 14-day period.
