Mayor Hau Lung-bin presented the awards to 441 outstanding students from private and public middle and high schools during the award ceremony at Taipei Municipal Lanya Junior High School on May 27.
The mayor called on the honor students to exercise their influence and become models worthy of imitation for their peers.
He noted that the students at the ceremony are all more gifted than he was, because he has never received any honor student award when he was in school. He also stressed that the city’s education policy is not one that stresses grades; rather, it promotes a balanced approach towards all ‘five aspects’ of education.
During his speech, the mayor cited one of the award winners this year – a young lady surnamed Liu from Taipei School for the Visually Impaired. According to the mayor, Liu is an outstanding student who excel in a wide range of subjects, from swimming to handicraft. The visually impaired and hearing-impaired student enjoys interacting with others and speaking with her friends over MSN. Her optimistic outlook is something we all should learn from, noted the mayor.
Many parents accompanied their kids to the award ceremony. The mayor invited the students to give their parents a hug to show their affection and gratitude.
The Department of Education reported that 441 students from 135 schools in the city received the award. The winners include 9 special school students, 155 middle school students, and 277 high school/vocational school students.
