The central government’s Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD) gave the green light to the Shezi Island Development Project following a presentation by Mayor Hau Lung-bin on January 5. The ambitious project, now pending evaluation at the Executive Yuan, will play a key role in the future development of the island.
According to the city government, the project encountered many obstacles since its creation ten years ago, with conflicts ranging from land usage to community preservation issues.
In 1970, a major flood control plan designated Shezi Island a flood discharge area. As a result, development plans for the surrounding area dwindled due to overwhelming restrictions.
The Shezi Island Development Project was drafted during the administration of former mayor Ma Ying-jeou. Hau continued advocating the plan and made numerous visits to CEPD and Water Resources Agency to communicate with officials for many years.
The project seeks to construct a sustainable, friendly, and safe living environment for residents of the island. Covering approximately 240 hectares of land, the development project will address issues including flood prevention, transportation, environmental conservation, leisure life, and rights of community residents.
Following the initial approval of the plan by the Water Resources Evaluation Committee in 2009, the council’s decision yesterday help paves the way to a final evaluation of the policy at the Executive Yuan.
