Mayor Doubles as One-day Farmer at Rice Planting Event

To offer residents an opportunity to experience the pleasure of rice planting, the Beitou Farmers’ Association organized a special “one-day farmer event” at the paddy of the Guandu Plain on March 13.
Wearing the casual clothing comprising a T-shirt and a pair of shorts, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin himself participated in the planting of rice seedlings. According to Hau, working in a paddy field is not new to him because he helped grow rice seedlings during his military service.
In his remarks to the event participants, Hau said this activity will enable children to be in farmers’ shoes and to personally experience the tiresomeness of farming, and this will raise the youth’s awareness to cherish foods.
Despite the scattered rain, the event attracted over three hundred individuals. The organizer set up a stall offering free rice snacks for participants. The rice seedlings planted during the event expected to produce crops by the month of June. The Association welcomed everyone to share in the pleasure of harvest at that time.
