Beer Festival Celebrations Take Place at Brewery

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the opening ceremony of the 2009 Taipei Taiwan Beer Festival at the Taipei Brewery on October 17. The event is co-organized by the Department of Civil Affairs, Taiwan Liquor and Tobacco Corporation (TTL), and the Taipei Brewery.
In addition to free beer sampling, the festival also features stage performances and a creators’ market. The mayor joked that the city government always have a hard time asking borough chiefs to attend district meetings; however, he noted that the beer festival attracted not only the borough chiefs of Zhongshan District, but also those from other districts.
Hau said Taiwan Beer won second place at a major beer competition in Germany. This shows that the international community recognizes the superb quality of TTL’s beer product.
During his speech, the mayor pointed out that the beer festival is in accordance with the city’s “one district, one feature” policy to attract tourists. He pointed out that the historical brewery is a great place to visit during weekdays and weekends.
He hopes that the city government will continue to work closely with TTL and the local community to promote the beer festival, making it a unique and localized event that will attract tourists to visit the brewery.
Taipei Brewery, formerly called Jianguo Brewery, was built in 1919 during the Japanese colonial period. The complex was the first plant to be constructed in Taiwan, and enjoyed a reputation that rivaled the Japanese breweries. The site, located on Bade Road in Zhongshan District, has been listed as a historical site by the Department of Cultural Affairs (DOCA), and is the only such site in Taipei which retains its original function.
