Calla Lily Festival Kicks off with Award Ceremony
On March 26, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin arrived at the “Dinghu Flower Valley Calla Lily Farm” to preside over the opening ceremony of the 2010 Zhuzihu Calla Lilly Festival.
In addition to presenting certificates of gratitude to the organizations supporting the event, Hau also handed out the awards to representatives from ten local farms whose flower arrangements won the horticulture design contest.
After the award ceremony, the mayor put on a chest wader and joined the kids from Hutian Elementary School in picking fresh calla lilies.
During his speech, Hau remarked that he attends the Calla Lily Festival every year. The event plays a key role in promoting agricultural tourism. He also expressed his gratitude to the local farmers’ associations for their involvement and to the staff from Taipei City Police Department and Department of Transportation for maintaining traffic throughout the festival period.
Hau stressed that each year the organizers introduce a major innovation. This year, to allow people residing in other parts of Taiwan to purchase flowers without actually visiting the plantations in Yangmingshan, local farms are now offering door-to-door calla lily delivery service.
According to Hau, Taipei City Government will be holding a number of flower-related events throughout the year. Starting with the Yangmingshan Flower Festival, the series continues with the Calla Lily Festival and the Chrysanthemum Show. In November, the Taipei International Flora Exposition will take the spotlight.
The mayor welcomes everyone to visit Taipei and explore the city of flowers.
