DOL to Hold Free Medical Service for Immigrant Workers
The Department of Labor (DOL) and the Tzu Chi Medical Association (TCMA) will set up a one-day free clinic for immigrant workers inside the Taipei Main Station (the First Floor Plaza between North Gate No.3 and West Gate No.1). Services will begin at 1:30PM on April 11.
In addition to health checkups, the reach-out program will offer diagnosis/treatment for issues related with eyes, skin, female reproductive system, general diseases, and mental health. Other services include health consultations, education seminars (CPR lessons) and brochures/publications giveaway. There will be staff who can communicate in Indonesian, Pilipino, and Vietnamese at the clinic.
The free medical service has been offered by DOL and TCMA since February of 1994. The Department of Health (DOH) became involved with the program in 1995 by providing outpatient services. Over the past seven years, there have been a total of 40 clinic sessions, and the number of people utilizing the medical care reached 8,426.
DOL Commissioner Chen Yeh-shin indicated that immigrant workers often encounter culture and language problems. He hopes that employers hiring the immigrant workers could allow them time for rest and leisure.
By holding the service, DOL encourages workers to pay more attention to their health, thereby improving the relationship between the workers and their employers.
