To celebrate the inauguration of the twelfth district sport center, President Ma Ying-jeou joined Mayor Hau Lung-bin at the opening ceremony of Wenshan District Sports Center on August 29.
Hau noted that he has attended the opening for eight district sport centers over the last four years. With the newly opened Wenshan District Sports Center, each of Taipei’s 12 administrative districts now has their separate sports centers. He expressed his gratitude to President Ma for drafting the initial plan in 2000. These facilities appear to be popular destinations for residents, with visitors per month quickly approaching one million.
As for the next step, the mayor remarked that he has plans for “second-generation” sports centers geared towards different user groups. Possibilities include extreme sports center, sports center for the aged/disabled, and water sports center. Hopefully, this policy will allow residents to find the “right” facilities catered to their needs, making Taipei an authentic healthy city.
Both President Ma and Mayor Hau joined Taiwanese snooker Wu Yu-lun in a game of pool following the ceremony. The three players took turns to pocket the billiard balls – each engraved with the name of a district sports center – one-by-one, symbolizing the start of a sports era for all residents.
Wenshan District residents will receive a 15 percent discount on all purchases at Wenshan District Sports Center for the next five years. The discount is 20 percent for the residents of Xingguan, Xingde, and Xingjia boroughs.
