Commissioner Kang Tzong-huu of the Department of Education (DOE) met with the winners of the 2010 RoboCup Junior League at Taipei City Hall on August 26. He praised the students for bringing back the gold medals in three categories – the best record for Taiwanese teams..
Kang praised the students for their superb performance at the competition, which required a combination of creativity with skills such as robotic design and programming. In addition, team members also had to make presentations and answer questions in English during the tournament, showing how challenging the tournament is for teams from non-English speaking countries and testifying for the young students’ ability in the foreign language.
Having taken place in June, over one hundred teams from 30 nations around the world competed in the RoboCup 2010 Singapore. A total of 11 teams from Taiwan took part in this international tournament.
Among these teams, both REX and Thousand-hand Bodhisattva won the gold medal in Best Choreography of RoboCup Junior Dance Challenge Primary and Best Presentation of RoboCup Junior Light-weight Soccer categories at this year’s event.
The RoboCup competition is an event which challenges the students’ knowledge in science and technology through experimenting with electronics and robotics. The first RoboCup was held in Japan back in 1997. Since then, major cities around the world have taken turns hosting this event including Paris, Stockholm, Melbourne, and Seattle.
