Live Broadcast of World Cup Opening at VIESHOW Plaza
With the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup kicking off this Saturday, Taipei City Government announced that it will collaborate with Chunghwa Telecom to organize a live public broadcast of the event at the VIESHOW Plaza in Xinyi District.
During the press conference on June 7, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin and Chunghwa Telecom President Lu Shyue-ching announced that the match between the teams of South Africa and Mexico will take place in the night of June 11. Furthermore, outdoor broadcasts for the quarterfinals are also slated for July 2 and 3, spotlighting the top eight teams.
Hau recalled a number of great moments during the previous World Cups, including the legendary play by Argentina’s Diego Maradona, as well as Zinedine Zidane’s head butt costing France a World Cup final. He noted that as a healthy city, the residents enjoy watching sports, as evident from the large turnout at the recent NBA exhibition match and LAD Dodger’s game in Taipei. He invites everyone to come to the session to enjoy the opening match and cheer for the teams.
Despite taking place halfway around the world in Johannesburg, the mayor thanked Chunghwa Telecom for bringing the games to Taipei, allowing residents to experience the fun and share their excitements with fellow audience at the scene. Lu also expressed his gratitude to the city government for providing an ideal venue.
During the press conference, the dignitaries presented two autographed soccer balls to the kindergarten kids of Songshan Soccer Club, hoping to see more soccer players among the younger generations
