NT$60.6 Billion Investment in Taipei Twin Towers to Create a New Landmark and National Gateway — A Live Preview into the Future of the City
DORTS stated that with a total investment of NT$60.6 billion, the Taipei Twin Towers are projected to provide approximately 16,000 job opportunities in the future. The Taipei Twin Towers C1/D1 development high-rise building will become a "New Gateway to Taiwan and a New Starting Point for Taipei." The project consists of two skyscrapers: the 53-story (approximately 280 meters) C1 building and the 70-story (approximately 360 meters) D1 building, and construction is continually underway with the two buildings gradually taking shape. DORTS explained that following the completion of construction the Taipei Twin Towers will be the second tallest high-rise building in Taiwan and will be a key new landmark of the Taipei West District Gateway Project. The newest construction promotional video, which was recently released, "The Story of How C1/D1 Took Shape as the Gateway to Taipei" takes the public on a tour of this key landmark which is set to transform Taipei's skyline and shows how it will turn the urban landscape upside-down. In accordance with the latest construction progress, the steel structure of the C1 building has been rapidly hoisted up to the 41st floor and has been hoisted up to the 32nd floor for the D1 building. Meanwhile, the overall construction of the project is in full swing, with the following construction tasks being simultaneously carried out at the work site: application of fire-retardant coating, installation of steel-deck panels, pouring of floor slab concrete, and installation of curtain walls. In the promotional video, DORTS takes a special look back at a pivotal decision made 21 years ago that had far-reaching consequences and would definitively change the future of Taipei. The central government had originally planned for the Airport MRT to enter downtown Taipei via a "fully elevated" route, with an elevated station to be constructed between Taipei Main Station and the south side of Civic Boulevard. However, based on long-term considerations regarding overall urban development and the image of the national gateway, Taipei City Government proposed a recommendation to modify the Taipei City section of the airport MRT and make it run underground and to make DORTS responsible for constructing and promoting the joint development of the C1 and D1 sites. This initiative not only transformed the nature of the project but has also created valuable space for the future development of the city's skyline and the integration of its transportation. Although modifying the plan to make the MRT run underground would require approximately NT$7 billion in additional project costs, Taipei City Government nevertheless resolved to shoulder the responsibility and demonstrated their forward-thinking investment in the future development of the city. DORTS pointed out that making the project underground not only integrated the Taipei City section of the Airport MRT into the surrounding underground railway transit system, but also facilitated the maximization of commercial benefits through the comprehensive development of the C1/D1 site. The Taipei Main Station area currently handles transfers for over 500,000 passenger trips daily, and the daily growth of the Taipei Twin Towers is the strong testament to these benefits. DORTS pointed out that in the future the two buildings will combine retail, office, hotel, and observation deck facilities. Furthermore, the construction of the buildings will create a brand-new landmark which will serve as an entrance point into western Taipei as well as a symbolic "Gateway into the Nation."
