Groundbreaking Ceremony for New Solar Powered Library

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the site dedication and groundbreaking ceremony for the “Solar Library” at Youth Park on July 9. The solar powered library will be another city library branch housed in a green building, similar to the Beitou Branch Library.
During his address, the mayor expressed his gratitude to Cheng Fu-tien Culture and Education Foundation and HAND Initiative for working with the city government to realize the project of building a new green library in Taipei. He pointed out that the library is made possible with the generous sponsorship of Motech Industry’s late chairman Cheng Fu-tien. He praised Cheng for being a model entrepreneur who gives back to the society.
The mayor also thanked legislators, city councilors, and local borough chiefs for their help and support. He mentioned that the director Tseng Shu-hsien of Taipei City Library plays an important role in the push to build more green buildings. Without the advocacy of director Tseng, the city would not have achieved so much progress in terms of energy-efficient and eco-friendly libraries.
The two-story Solar Library will be a 24-hour unmanned library, allowing residents to borrow and return books, as well as access other library services around the clock. The first floor of the library will include five areas, including regular books, children’s book, periodical and magazines, selected theme, and data research. The second floor will include classrooms and an exhibition hall for energy conservation.
Hau noted that architect Chang Ching-hwa, the man behind the construction of Beitou Branch Library, will be working on the project. The completion date of the solar powered library is slated for June of 2010.
