Taipei Embankment Story Unveils New Mural at Sanjiao Ferry Pier: A Tribute to Memories Along the River

The Taipei Embankment Story initiative continues with a new mural beside Chengde Bridge (Lane 2, Section 4, Chengde Road), this time paying homage to the cultural heritage of the Sanjiao Ferry Pier area. The beautification project draws from the rich cultural heritage of the surrounding neighborhood, reimagining scenes of Keelung River’s past: red worm fishing, dragon boat rowing, and the iconic Zaichun Swimming Pool.

According to the Taipei Hydraulic Engineering Office (HEO), the Zaichun Swimming Pool was once the city’s largest public swimming pool, a place where generations of Taipei residents learned to swim and cherished their first aquatic memories. The mural artfully blends these scenes with the nearby bridges and architecture, featuring cheerful ducks, swimmers, and rowers in warm, nostalgic hues that rekindle heartfelt summer memories.

The River Engineering Section of the HEO emphasized that Sanjiao Ferry Pier was Taipei’s last active ferry crossing and continues to uphold its dragon boat traditions. This levee beautification project stands out not only for its visuals but for the enthusiastic involvement of local residents, who took part in both design discussions and on-site execution. Their participation deepened community bonds and added a warm, human touch to the finished artwork, thus transforming a public space into a living cultural landmark.

Launched in 2020, the Taipei Embankment Story initiative brings together artists and cross-disciplinary designers to transform floodwalls into canvases of collective memory. By turning the levees into vibrant canvases, the project sparked new conversations about beautifying urban infrastructure through creativity. At the heart of the initiative is a deep commitment to community engagement. The team works closely with local borough chiefs, elders, and residents to uncover the unique cultural and historical identity of each neighborhood. These stories are then thoughtfully translated into murals that reflect the spirit of the place, creating a collection of embankment artworks that celebrate Taipei’s riverside heritage—one mural at a time.
