Deaflympics Safety Drills Conducted at Event Venues

To familiarize staff and volunteers with emergency response procedures, Taipei City Government conducted a number of drills at the main venue of the 2009 Summer Deaflympics. Mayor Hau Lung-bin arrived at the venues on August 31 to observe the drills.

The safety drills at Taipei Stadium involved different kinds of situations, including angry mobs throwing bottled water into the field; visitors setting off the alarm by accident; protesters lobbing volatile cocktail, and injured athletes requiring medical attention.

At another drill conducted at the tennis venue, the mayor watched volunteers and staff look through the bags and belongings of people attending the game. Security personnel also examined vehicles entering the venue for explosives and other dangerous possessions.

Another scenario began with one of the athletes collapsing in the middle of a game. Medical staff and volunteers rushed to the court to perform first aid on the patient before transporting him to the closest medical station. After receiving first aid, the athlete was placed on an ambulance and rushed to Taipei City Hospital Zhongxiao Campus for further treatment.

According to Tang Hsiu-ping, a doctor of Shin Kong Hospital stationed at the tennis venue, all local hospitals have standard operation procedures in place to handle possible H1N1 Flu patients. If the patient is confirmed to be a positive case, all staff and volunteers that came in close contact with the patient will be required to carry out self-quarantine.
