In response to questions from city councilors about the effectiveness of city minibus service, the Public Transportation Office (PTO) indicated that the minibuses are important tool for short distance travel to peripheral communities.
According to PTO, members of these remote communities participate in the planning of routes at an early stage. The majority of city minibuses travel to the mountainous and rural areas of Taipei, serving the populace living in these out-of-reach neighborhoods and fulfilling their commuting needs.
PTO reported that there has been substantial growth in minibus usage between January and August this year, showing an average passenger volume of 7.4 individuals per trip. This indicated a 35 percent growth when compared to the number in 2008.
Between January and August, 732,238 passengers have taken the minibus. PTO noted that the minibuses serve an average of 3,013 passengers each day, and expects to serve one million passengers by the end of the year.
