New Police Commissioner Takes Office

The city government held the swearing-in ceremony for the new police commissioner on August 3. Mayor Hau Lung-bin announced that National Police Agency Deputy Director-general Shieh Hsiu-neng is taking over as the head of Taipei City Police Department (TCPD).

The mayor stressed the importance of police ethics during his address. He pointed out that being the frontline guardian of the city, the conduct of police officers will inevitably have an impact upon the citizens’ perception on the police department’s ability to uphold the law.

In light of recent incidents that damaged the reputation of Taipei’s police force, the mayor expressed his hope that the new commissioner will be able to rebuild the public’s confidence in TCPD.

Hau noted that traffic and security are the two major concerns of Taipei’s residents, and he hopes that TCPD under Commissioner Shieh will be able to achieve the expectations of the public.

He emphasized that as the island’s capital city, Taipei serves as the center of politics, economy, culture, and transportation. Being the capital of the country, it requires more effort from the local police department to maintain security. Citing recent events such as the visit of China’s envoy Zhang Mingqing, the Legislative Yuan election, and the May 17 demonstration, Hau commended the city’s police officers for accomplishing these challenging tasks.

While media spotlight focus on serious crime, the mayor indicated that the key to ensuring security is to maintain law and order. The media might dismiss crimes such as burglary and theft; however, most citizens are concerned about these issues. According to the mayor, this is the reason why he is implementing the policy of “Zero tolerance against Crime.”
