Japanese Woodblock Prints Seminar at Beitou Hot Springs Museum

To provide residents with a wonderful learning opportunity during the summer vacations, Taipei City Government Department of Cultural Affairs (DOCA) will be holding several classes at the Beitou Hot Springs Museum to teach students the art of Japanese woodblock prints in July and August. Japanese woodblock prints (also known as Ukiyo-e) is a Japanese art form that involves the use of woodblocks to create affordable colorful prints in large quantities. By using different ‘layers’ of woodblocks for printing, Japanese artisans are able to combine myriad colors to a mass-produced print and post card. Seminar participants will use woodblocks and color inks provided by the museum to create a print of the building. The instructor will demonstrate the procedures in creating the image with the tools, and how blocks in black, orange/red, and yellow/green interact to reproduce a Ukiyo-e print. DOCA invites residents to bring their family members to the Beitou Hot Springs Museum for the hand-on experience in creating unique Japanese woodblock prints.
