In anticipation of a large turnout of revelers heading for the New Year countdown party at the Xinyi District, the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) announced on December 29 that it will carry out multiple measures to meet the passenger demand on this special occasion.
According to the TRTC, the MRT will operate around-the-clock from 6AM December 31, 2009 to Midnight January 1, 2010. Throughout the New Year’s Eve, services will run on peak hour schedule. The company pledged to send additional 500 staffs at MRT stations to deal with the expected heavy traffic flow at the platforms. With the addition of Muzha-Neihu line, the MRT’s total ridership during the span of 42 hours might increase from last year’s 1.95 million to a new record high.
To avoid the overcrowding at the Zhongxiao Fuxing Station, the TRTC encouraged passengers embarking on the stations at the Muzha-Neihu Line – including Wende, Neihu, Dahu Park, Huzhou, Donghu and Nangang Software Park – to disembark at the Nangang Exhibition Center Station. There will be free shuttle buses waiting at the station to transport passengers to the Nangang Station. By doing to, passengers could arrive at the party location through the Banqiao-Nangang Line, and the high-capacity system could ensure passengers a relatively time-saving ride.
The TRTC also noted that the skip-stop pattern may implement at the Taipei City Hall Station if the overcrowding persists at the main portal. Passengers will disembark at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Station beforehand.
The company asked the public to comply with the guidance of the station staffs and pay close attention to the safety of themselves and companions.
