This year marks the eighth anniversary of “Digital Feast, Dreams Come True” digital learning subsidy program. On August 10, Taipei City Government and Taipei Computer Association organized a special ceremony at city hall to celebrate the occasion and to thank the sponsors of the program
The subsidy program, sponsored by the Department of Social Welfare (DSW) and private companies, seeks to narrow the digital divide by making computer systems and related services available to students from low income households at an affordable price.
Through this program, eligible students will have to pay no more than NT$5,000 for a brand-new computer system that comes with pre-installed OS, antivirus software, online learning courses, internet connection with discounts on monthly fees, and more.
Over the past eight years, 7,206 students from 2,968 disadvantaged families took advantage of the subsidy program to boost their computer skills and knowhow. With the necessary tools, they are able to access the Internet and conduct online learning. This year, a total of 600 households received the computer equipment subsidy.
Private sponsors of the program include IT industry heavyweights Acer, Gigabyte Technology, Gjun, Trend Micro Taiwan, Symantec Taiwan, and more.
At the ceremony, Mayor Hau Lung-bin presented certificate of gratitude to the representatives from these corporations; he also met with past recipients of the subsidy at the event. The mayor praised the effectiveness of this policy and requested DSW to continue offering the subsidy to disadvantaged students in the future.
