Mayor Attends Opening of “Second Skin”
> Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the opening night gala of the Museum of Contemporary Art’s latest exhibition “Second Skin” on March 9. Taipei is the first stop for the world tour of these design pieces. According to Mayor Hau, the city is greatly honored to be the first to host this exhibition. He hopes that through works such as these high caliber cultural events and exchanges, Taipei will become even more visible on the international stage. Furthermore, he hopes that such exposures will also help the city’s cultural and creative industries flourish globally. The Mayor and Department of Cultural Affairs (DOCA) Commissioner Lee Yong-ping viewed the various artworks after the gala. Many of the designs were extremely creative and uniquely created, which also brought new meanings and dimensions to the pieces. The exhibition was curated by Ellen Lupton of Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in New York. There are many types of skin and every object has one. It is the one barrier that separates the inside of objects that can be seen or touched. In “Second Skin,” the human skin is used as an analogy to illustrate the organic quality of modern design. It showcases how products, fashion, architecture, and media are increasing the possibilities of everyday life through the convergence of natural and artificial. By exploiting surfaces that reveal and/or conceal, designers are demonstrating the complexity and depth of skin.
