Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin arrived at Penglai Elementary School on November 26 to inspect the new “English Village” facility. During his visit, the mayor experienced the different stage sets and conversation scenarios, including airport check in/out counter, airplane cabin, inquiry counter, culture area, puzzle game area, library, and diner. Hau also enjoyed watching a play in English performed by the school kids.
Following the hands-on sessions, Hau addressed the young English learners and praised them for their excellent command of the foreign language. He stressed that the ability to speak good English will give the students an edge in the highly competitive international environment.
The mayor expressed his gratitude to the faculty members for their input and dedication. Realizing that a number of parents and volunteers helped with stage preparations and rehearsals, Hau said local elementary schools should be proud for the selfless involvement and contribution of these people.
After watching a play in English by the students, Hau invited them to serve as English tour guide at the Taipei Confucius Temple, the Baoan Temple, and the exhibition halls during next year’s flower expo.
There are two “English Villages” for elementary school students in Taipei – one at Binjiang Elementary School and one at Penglai Elementary School. By offering the students a professional, all-English environment, the city government hopes to encourage them to learn information from an international perspective.
